Vastu Tips for PUJA ROOM

October 13, 2016 — by Meetu Sehgal

winter-along-coastline-5

Puja or prayer room is a cosmic antenna that is full of positive energies and vibes that no matter what mental or emotional state one is in, entering this space refreshes your energy and connects you with positive energy. The ritual of Puja is not just a ritual to appease gods but an initiation into the spiritual path that ultimately leads to inner form of contemplation and spiritual evolution. It can also be used as a place for meditation. Therefore it is important to build this space of Puja Room in such a way that helps you meditate as well as connect you to your inner source.

Direction

According to Vastu Shastra, the best direction in the house to build Puja Room is northeast followed by east and north directions. Northeast receives the most beneficial energies of Sun therefore, it is full of Satwik Tatva or pure essence (positive vibrations).

As a corollary, if north-east of the house is not available for the Puja Room, the place for Puja can be made in an available room in the northeast corner of the room. Avoid having the Puja Ghar in the Bedroom.

While doing Puja or meditation, one should face east or north direction. Avoid placing idols on the south wall.

The room should be well ventilated with plenty of natural light and air. So Large Windows can be provided in the north and east direction. If the room does not have the arrangement for proper natural light, as an alternative, there should be good sources of Artificial Light here.

The Agnikund should be in the southeast direction of the worship room. The sacred offerings to the fire should be made with the face towards the east

Colour of the walls of the Puja Room should preferably be white, light yellow or light blue. Marble, if used, should always be white.

Puja Ghar

1. The base level of Puja Ghar should be at least 6 inches above the floor so that the idols are above the navel when you are praying depending on the position, whether standing or sitting.

2. Nothing should be stored above the cabinet or Puja Ghar.

3. The idols of deities in the home should not be bigger than the span of the hand from the tip of the little finger to the tip of the thumb of the head of the family. Any idol bigger than this is inauspicious for homes.

4. The idols should be at least 2 inches away from the wall.

5. Never keep too many idols. Duplicates of idols should be donated in the best manner. Crowded Mandir is equal to cluttered space that does not harbor positive energies.

6. Materials used for construction of idols should also be kept in mind. Best materials are stone, wood, gold, silver and precious stone. Other materials that can be used are clay, bronze and brass.

7. Keep the Puja Room and the place of idols clean and uncluttered. The space below the Puja Ghar can be used to store items like incense sticks, kumkum etc. Alternatively, south and west directions can be used for Storage.

8. Have a threshold around the Puja Room so that the space is defined. The roof of the Puja Room can be in the shape of pyramid as this is a very auspicious shape and it is well known that the energies under the pyramid are extremely positive that assist in spiritual opening and meditation.

Some Things to Avoid

1. Puja Room should not share a wall with toilet or Bathroom

2. Avoid broken or chipped idols in the Puja Ghar

3. Don’t sit bare on the floor while doing prayer or meditation.

4. Don’t have photos of dead people along with the idols.

5. Idols should not be exactly in front of the Entrance.

6. Unless worshipped every day, avoid keeping srichakra, saligram and idols of ancient temples in the house.

Then what is the prob if u have daughter. Its good that u shud do pooja in front of them and shud teach them the same so dat they can follow thiz in future. Whatever ull do they will follow u. And puja is something which one shux do daily . Its not a weekly schedule. Our day starts with god only and once we are not done with doing our prayers how can one start his or her day. This is the one thing which gives us positive energy for whole day.

Start as early as possible. Burn atleast 1 candle in front of anyone idol with your daughet. Start reading Ramayana and Mahabharata with your daughter daily for 10 minutes.

Doing Pooja daily is a good practice, as we feel peace and connected to universal spirit! But I feel feeling guilty should never be the case in being unable to do the same! Feeling guilty is a reflection of your obsession in doing pooja and not practicing for relaxation purpose!

If the pooja cabinet cannot be placed anywhere else, then keep the idols in such a manner that they do not touch the back of pooja cabinet. Keep a salt lamp near the cabinet.

Very nice & useful information. please share why the size of the idols should be restricted. I have an idol of 2 1/2 ft. in my pooja room. How it is unauspicious.

      Dear Sunil,
Most of the ancient texts on Vastu suggest keeping the idols of a particular size at home, the reasons are not well known. This however makes more sense in today’s world with limited space. Also the reason could be that the house is not just a place for worship, it is a place where one lives and performs worldly duties. Hence balance is necessary between spiritual and worldly duties. That is why the ancients must have prescribed a size to maintain the balance in the energies at home. Also idols are an external point of focus that ultimately lead you inside.

Mandir in living room is not advisable. If no other option is possible, keep it covered when not doing puja and build or create a small boundary around it.

Can you please suggest location of puja room in case of an individual duplex house(or villa). My belief is that puja room should be placed in upper floor (as per the directions you have mentioned) because if we place as per the common process in ground floor the upper floor in the same place has walking space, that means I am able to walk on the puja room (God). Hence I am planning to have it in upper floor. Please let me know if this understanding is correct.

I have already posted once not sure why it is missing. Can you please advice of puja room in case of an individual house duplex style. We have place perfectly in NE corner, however my doubt is that do I construct puja room in ground level or 1st floor as stairs there is a place in common room just above ground level hence if I construct P.room in ground floor is it OK if we are walking above that place on upper floor? Or I can placeP.room on upper floor itself. Note that upper room is part of comon area connecting bedrooms and balcony, while the same place in ground levle is part of dining room
    Thanks

    1. Can we pooja room with door opening to the south? this would have photos/ idols of diety facing south and we facing north while praying?

    2. How about pooja room at the nort-east corner of the room? this would have photos/ idols of diety facing south-west and we facing north-east while praying?

Which of the above options is better suited as per vastu for a pooja room? please advise.

Pooja room door faces to master bedroom door. The gap between pooja room and master bedroom is 5 feet plus.
Is it fine to have pooja room facing master bedroom door?

    HI,
Iam recently shifted to my aunt’s flat which having 3 rooms; one drawing room in south east, kitchen in north east and bed room in north west. A little bit space towards south west portion from drawing room left un occupied. Bath room coming in between this space & bed room. Drawing room have 2 doors one is south facing and another one east facing. We usually use the south door to enter the flat. Iam facing acute financial prblm since I shifted this flat. Kids & wife too have illness & health issues. Kindly advise whether things are OK in my flat or any changes to be done
