In Indian homes, the kitchen is the heart of the home. Unlike the western world we Indians still love home cooked food , experimenting with different cuisines with our family and thus ending up spending a lot of time in the kitchen . The kitchen becomes a place for family discussions and entertainment. As we love to entertain large number of guests during our continuously ongoing festivals and weddings we also have a requirement of large storage spaces in the kitchen. Of course customized modular cabinets , easy to clean counter tops ,stainless steel Hobs and other appliances are part of every dream kitchen.

So, when we think of renovating an existing kitchen or one in a new apartment the first and foremost thought is functionality , as the overall space should be efficient. The location of the Refrigerator, Hob and the Sink is of utmost importance to ensure an organised and efficient movement while cooking. Storage is the next important aspect. As I pointed out above we need lots of space for large pots and pans , appliances and crockery. There, of course, exists the modular option but some may wish to create a customized cooking space . Finally the kitchen should look attractive, clean and a place you feel comfortable in to enjoy cooking for your family.

How to finalise the layout of the kitchen ?

If you are renovating an existing kitchen and want to retain the plumbing and electrical points for ease of execution and economy, you can still be creative, innovative and deliver an absolutely new look and thus delight your family. For small kitchens a Galley layout is perfect . Because there will be a limitation on horizontal space you can create multiple vertical cabinets and shelves to multiply your storage. For large kitchens there are many options like L shape , U shape or an Island Kitchen . You can add a breakfast nook in this size of kitchen. For customized family needs other ideas can be added like an ironing space or a washing machine with dryer or a play area for an infant or even space for a television.

While deciding on the position of Hob, Refrigerator and Sink keep the following parameters in mind – Distance between Sink and Hob – 6 feet , Hob and Refrigerator – 4 feet to 7 feet and Refrigerator and Sink – 4 feet to 9 feet. Standard height for a countertop is 3 feet keeping the average height of user to be 5 feet 2 inches.

How to create efficient storage in the kitchen ?

Try to use every inch of space for smart, space saving storage. Need some ideas? Build hidden cabinets and compartments in an island, hang floating shelves on walls, or bring unexpected pieces of free standing furniture for extra storage. Try to have designated storage for each and every activity to be carried out here. Use the corner carousal effectively and of course vertical stacking is a necessity for small kitchens.

How to decide on options of countertops and cabinets?

Because the layout and storage options are pretty standard, selecting interesting materials is the key for helping your kitchen stand out. When it comes to counters, granite countertops and marble countertops are elegant options, while Corian , Engineered marble and stainless steel counters are a little more trendy. For a bit of color, add a bright mosaic tile backsplash or pick out a vibrant vitrified tile floor finish. You can even have highlighter colour in the cabinet layout . A champagne colour cabinet in the centre with beige ones all around or a black and white colour scheme can dazzle your kitchen look at no extra cost.
